Hope That Waits: Finding Certainty in God's Faithfulness

Nov 30, 2025    Pastor Andrew Browder

This Advent message takes us on a journey through Psalm 130, one of the ancient Songs of Ascent that Jewish pilgrims sang on their way to Jerusalem. The central insight revolves around a powerful truth: a hope that waits is a hope fixed in what is certain. We explore what it means to cry out from the depths of our despair, guilt, and brokenness, recognizing that genuine hope requires profound humility. The passage confronts us with a sobering reality—if God kept a record of our wrongs, none of us could stand. Yet the stunning revelation comes in verse 4: with God there is forgiveness. This isn't superficial optimism or wishful thinking; it's hope anchored in the character of Yahweh, the covenant-keeping God who pardons both our guilt and our shame. The sermon beautifully connects this Old Testament cry with the fulfillment found in Jesus Christ, who came as Emmanuel to save His people from their sins. We're challenged to examine where we've placed our hope—in circumstances, relationships, financial security, or health—and redirect it toward the One who never fails. Like watchmen waiting for the dawn with absolute certainty that the sun will rise, we can wait on God's redemption, knowing He will come through in His way and His time.
