Living in the In-Between: Our Purpose While Awaiting Christ's Return

Dec 28, 2025    Pastor Andrew Browder

We find ourselves in a fascinating tension—caught between the celebration of Christ's first coming and the anticipation of His return. This message draws us into Acts 1, where the disciples stand at this exact crossroads, having witnessed Jesus ascend into heaven and being commissioned for the work ahead. The profound truth here is that we're not meant to be paralyzed by either nostalgia for what was or anxiety about what's to come. Instead, we're called to live purposefully in the in-between. Jesus makes three powerful promises that anchor us: His presence through the Holy Spirit, His power to accomplish His mission, and His certain return. The disciples wanted immediate restoration of Israel's kingdom, but Jesus redirected their focus—not to dismiss their hopes, but to expand their vision. He promised them power not for their own sake, but to be His witnesses from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. This same promise applies to us today. We're not left to figure everything out or fix everything around us. Rather, we're empowered by God's very presence dwelling within us to participate in what He's already doing. The question isn't whether Jesus is coming back—He is. The question is: what will He find us doing when He returns? Are we merely gazing into heaven, or are we actively engaged in the commission He's left us?
